August 2018 - Who lives close to a metro station?

Although Brussels has a dense and extensive public transport network, not all the Region’s residents are living in the vicinity of a metro station. Certain areas enjoy better accessibility than others.

The map above, which depicts the regional territory divided into 145 districts, highlights these differences. For each of these districts, we examined what percentage of the population lives within a 500-metre radius of a metro station. The indicator values for each of these districts are represented by five colour gradients. The greater the number of people living within a 500-metre radius of a metro station, the darker the colour. Thus, the districts shaded dark blue are those where proportionally more people live close to a metro station (more than 85 % of the residents). Conversely, in the districts that are shaded light green, no or few people live within 500 metres of a metro station.

The metro network, for its part, is depicted by the orange lines, along which the metro stations accessible to users are situated.
 

An in-depth look at the Brussels metro

In 2016, the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB-MIVB) celebrated the 40th anniversary of its metro system. The metro network has evolved significantly over the years and now numbers four lines, covering a total of 39.9 km.

Two of these lines (2 and 6) run along the northern boundaries of the inner ring, south of the Pentagon. The western track follows the western railway line, extending (line 6) north and running all the way up to the Heysel Plateau.

The other two lines (1 and 5) run through the Pentagon and the European Quarter in an east-west direction. In the west, line 1 runs as far as the Gare de l'Ouest station while line 5 goes all the way to the Erasmus Hospital and Office Park in Anderlecht. East, line 5 branches out to Herrmann-Debroux, in Auderghem, while line 1 runs to Stockel, in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.


As you would expect, the map depicts the configuration of the STIB-MIVB metro network. The people living within the Pentagon and immediate surroundings are particularly well catered for as they live in proximity of the places where almost all the lines meet. Accordingly, there is no shortage of stations or possible destinations to choose from here.

In the second ring, the values remain high all along the radius lines that run from the outlying districts to the centre.

The areas with poor metro access may be well covered by other modes of transport (bus, tram or train, operated by STIB-MIVB, De Lijn, TEC or the SNCB-NMBS). In other cases, coverage by all the modes of public transport is poor.
