18/03/2019 - Decline of international trade, despite increase of trade in services

Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) - News of the 18th of March 2019 - In the context of the National Accounts Institute (NAI), the statistical authorities of the three Belgian Regions and the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) issued the regional breakdown of the Belgian imports and exports of goods and services for the 2007-2016 period.

What does it tell us about Brussels ?

In 2016, Brussels Region’s exports declined by 3.2 % (from 47.5 to 45.9 billion euros). It is mainly  exports of goods which decreased (-8.4 %). Exports of services increased slightly in 2016 (+0.9 %).

Imports fell by 6.4 % in 2016 (from 57.4 to 53.7 billion euros). As with exports, imports of goods declined (‑11.7 %) while imports of services increased (+ 1.9 %).

In 2016, the Brussels Region’s net exports (= exports minus imports) decreased for the fourth year in a row (from -10.0 to -7.8 billion euros). This evolution of the balance is explained by that of trade in goods.

This publication completes the report of July 2018: "Regional breakdown of the Belgian imports and exports of goods and services, 2006-2015. The year 2016 has been added and the years 2014 and 2015 have been revised.
