What proportion of the population is affected by excessive noise in Brussels?

Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) - Did you know? - 29/04/2020

Answer: 72%

72% of the population of the Brussels-Capital Region has to contend with noise levels above 55 decibels on average over 24 hours, which is the European threshold for excessive exposure.

This is a measurement of environmental noise (road, rail or air traffic, noise from industrial activities, etc.).

Noise is measured at the most exposed façade of homes.

Population exposure is calculated as a 24-hour average, which therefore includes day, evening and night-time noise.
