What is the height of the Congress Column in Brussels?

Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) - Did you know? - 09/10/2019

Answer: 47 metres

The Congress Column, which is 47 metres high, was inaugurated on 26 September 1859.

It commemorates the 1830 National Congress of Belgium  which wrote the Belgian Constitution.

The monument houses an inner staircase with 193 stairs and is topped with a 5-meter-high statue representing Leopold I, the first Belgian king.

To honour the victims of the First World War, Belgium decided to bury the unknown soldier at the foot of the column, on 11 November 1922, and an eternal flame was added.

Every year, the Armistice of the First World War is commemorated in front of the Unknown Soldier's tomb.
