How many people did the regional public administrations employ in 2017?

Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) - Did you know? - 08/01/2019

Answer: 8,855

On 31 December 2017, the regional public administrations of the Brussels-Capital Region employed 8,855 people.

  • 1,848 people were employed by the three regional public services (Brussels Regional Public Service, Brussels Planning and Heritage and Brussels Regional Public Service of Taxation),
  • 7,007 people were working for the 10 Public Service Institutions (PSIs) that are listed in the 7.4.4.7 and 7.4.4.8 tables of the subtheme “Domestic employment”.

Half of those 8,855 employees  were employed as contractual agents while the other half  were employed as statutory civil servants.

The regional public services employ slightly more women than men (56% women for 44% men), while PSIs employ far more men than women (72% men for 28% women). In that respect, especially the SIAMU (Fire Brigade and Emergency Medical Service) and Bruxelles-Propreté (waste collection & recycling) stand out as more than 90% of their staff are male.
